Great free automation app

AutomateIt is a fantastic free automation app for your Android phone.

Like similar paid apps such as Tasker, AutomateIt allows you to force your phone to carry out a specific action when a specific situation acts as a trigger. For example, you can use AutomateIt to automatically mute your phone when you go to the movies, or to deactivate all notifications after a certain time at night.

Although it takes a few minutes to get to grips with (have a look at the examples on the AutomateIt website for practice), AutomateIt is actually very easy to use. Click the blue Add icon to bring up the New Rule window, then specify the Trigger and the Action. Click the little tools icon beside the Trigger and Action menus in order to be more specific about each one. Don't forget to save after each choice – AutomateIt doesn't check if you want to or not.

AutomateIt has a number of little features that make it pretty handy. You can set a delay on any rule, which means that the action triggered doesn't happen immediately. You can also back up and restore your rules, an excellent idea when you have put effort into getting them just right.

By far AutomateIt's best feature, however, is the selection of triggers and actions you can choose from. From basic actions, like playing a notification noise or changing sound settings, to more complex actions, like launching a certain application or making geographically-based changes, a little bit of effort could easily make AutomateIt one of the most valuable apps on your smartphone.

AutomateIt is a fantastic app – just don’t be put off by how complicated it initially looks.
